Sports Injury Treatment Northampton
Have you started to find that aches and pains are getting in the way of sports and hobbies you love you do? At our Chiropractic Clinic we deal with sports injury treatment in Northampton to help you overcome any aches or pains and prevent it from occurring in the future.
Common Sports Injuries
Frequent participation in sports or the occasional jog can all end up with the unintended injury, some studies have put running injuries at a risk of up to 80% per runner, per year! CrossFit, although high intensity has recently been found to be comparable to rugby injury rates (although a high proportion of CrossFit injuries are focussed on the shoulders or back). Any sport, done poorly or when deconditioned carries a high risk of injury - it wasn't that long ago that my clinic was full of people who had been trying the once popular "100 day squat challenge" without any coaching or pre-conditioning.
Take running as an example, probably the most accessible exercise for the average person, easy to do with very little equipment other than a pair of shoes and some comfortable clothing. The seasoned runner would hopefully know the importance of warming up and the cool down but I'm sure you have been in a situation where you just put your shoes on, open the door an go. Most of the time you'd be fine but one day there's pain or stiffness during or after the run, then perhaps this becomes the norm. Then one day you go for a run and the ache becomes an injury.
Higher frequency or intensity runners tend to be more susceptible to overuse injuries, this if effected by technique, experience or running further less frequently because the body requires time and gradual training in order to adapt to a running schedule. Foot function is also important - is the foot mobile and stable enough to deal with the repetitive pavement pounding? If not, what else could be absorbing this stress? The most common running injuries are to the lower limb - foot, ankle, knee, hip and any of the muscles in between. Typically, running is a low load on the spine but various compensating movement patterns could aggravate existing back pains.

Sports Injury Treatment
Repetitive stress within sports, whether amateur or professional, can lead to stiffening of muscles and joints which can then have unintended consequences such as joint pain, muscle pain, nerve irritation or even stress fractures. As a result, chiropractors often see problems related to sports such as shoulder pain, neck and back pain, elbow, hip, knee and ankle pain that can turn the enthusiastic runner or gym go-er into a spectator.
Although specially trained in diagnosis and treatment of spinal problems, Chiropractors use many soft tissue treatments for muscle aches and pain and have a good use of rehabilitation - essential for return to sports from any injury. Recovering from an injury is one thing but knowing you are doing your best to prevent recurrence is key. We've all seen the profession sportsperson that has returned too early only to be back on the side lines with a flare up soon after. In some cases it is necessary to refer for further investigation such as X-ray, MRI or Ultrasound scans.
If you've been experiencing any sports aches and pain that you are concerned may start to get in the way of your training or competition please visit our chiropractor clinic and have the problems assessed early on so that you can deal with these issues before they become a bigger problem. An appropriate treatment plan or advice on mobility and strength work to do at home or in the gym may keep you on target.
